Hiking with kids

KITIWAPF children's hiking trail

Discovering forests and nature hand in hand with kids and enjoying a well deserved meal at the "Alm" (hut) - sounds like a perfect hiking day with the whole family, doesn't it? The KITIWAPF (children's hiking path) in Eben im Pongau is designed just for that. Both destinations, Moosalm and Reitlehenalm, await with playgrounds and tasty food and drinks. You can find all information regarding KITIWAPF, other family friendly destinations and tips for hiking with children here.

The KITIWAPF in Eben im Pongau

The two different KITIWAPF paths are perfect for motivating children for a hike. Along the stroller-friendly "Entdeckerweg" (discovery path) and the more steep "Abenteurerweg" (adventure path), you will meet many animals, which want to tell you about their life in the forest and give you their traces for your stamping booklet. With a completed booklet, you will get a little reward at Moosalm or Reitlehenalm. Get the booklet at each starting point or at our tourism office.

Tips for hiking with children

There are many more family friendly activities to do in Eben im Pongau and the region of Salzburger Sportwelt. Especially when hiking with children, it is recommended to make certain preparations:

Starting time

Especially during summer, it is recommended to start early to avoid the biggest heat. Starting early, you can rest at the hut or in the shadowy forests during noon.

Duration

You and your kids are hiking more often? Then try a new, little longer tour. If the children are not (yet) familiar with hiking, avoid long hikes.

Which trail?

When hiking with kids, prefer themed trails or trails leading to huts with playgrounds.

What to take with you

Bring enough water to drink and some snacks - fruit or some glucose tabs are perfect for re-energizing tired legs.

Take a break

Getting there is half the fun - and with taking enough breaks, it's even better.

Fantasy

Nature inspires young and old. Try out your fantasy - is this a tree stump or a dwarf? And does this cloud look like a rabbit? Let's have a look!

Spielend wandern - playful hiking

It does not have to be a themed trail every time you and the kids go on a hike - nature itself is the biggest and best playgrounds of them all. In every forest, behind every turn the unexpected is waiting to be discovered. Stones, branches and cones are perfect for makeshift games in nature, with nature. Österreichs Wanderdörfer (Austrians hiking towns) created a booklet full of fun games. You can get this booklet for free at our tourism office, via brochure order or as download - it fits into every backpack!

Use public transport

Many starting points are reachable via public transport. For many children, going by train or bus already is a highlight - and you can leave the car at your accommodation. In the Salzburger Sportwelt region, you can take all busses for only € 1,- per ride - just show your Salzburger Sportwelt Card to the bus driver.

More family friendly hiking attractions

Wanderberg Grießenkar - Flachau

Hiker's Mountain Griessenkar can be reached best from Flachau via Starjet 1, just 10 minutes from Eben im Pongau. The stroller-friendly Flori's Erlebnispfad is a highlight for families - with its many stations it is perfect for puzzle fans and little adventurers!

Bärtl’s Familienwanderweg - Filzmoos

In our neighbour town Filzmoos (10 minutes away) Bärtl's Family Trail is waiting for you. Many swings, balance and coordination stations challenge the kids along the stroller-friendly trail. Tip: Bärtl's Family Trail can be reached best via the (also stroller-friendly) UNICEF-Herzerlweg.

Adventure at Gamskogel - Zauchensee

Also, there is a short, family-friendly hike to Seekarsee (outdoor-stroller-friendly). Another highlight is "Zauchi's Bummelzug", a tractor-train which operates during summer break. If you are on the way with teenagers, the hike to Rosskopf is a good choice. The tour leads from Gamskogelhütte via Seekarscharte to Rosskopf and back to Zauchensee via Höchalm and Unterbergalm.
